Agile Films revamped their production process with virtual workstations for 3D rendering, enabling seamless remote collaboration. The cloud-based solution provided real-time media access, boosted efficiency, and enhanced content quality, resulting in faster project delivery.
Agile Films, a dynamic media production company, was grappling with operational bottlenecks that hampered their creative process. The challenges of delayed feedback, inconsistent media quality, and fragmented workflows slowed down production and collaboration, leading to inefficiencies across the board. Collaboration was particularly difficult as their existing setup made it challenging for artists and animators to work remotely or access projects from different locations. Additionally, the local workstations struggled to handle the demands of complex renders and simulations, leading to long wait times and reduced productivity.
The absence of a centralised, shared folder for media assets further complicated file management and team coordination. Moreover, the large media files required significant storage capacity and robust data management solutions, which their on-premises setup could not efficiently support. There were also concerns about business continuity, as relying on physical workstations in a single location left the company vulnerable to disruptions from local disasters or technical failures. Finally, rendering bottlenecks posed a significant challenge, slowing down project completion and increasing the pressure to meet tight client deadlines.
Faced with these issues, Agile Films needed a transformative solution—one that would enable real-time, high-definition media access and provide tools for effective collaboration. By reducing feedback delays, optimising workflows, overcoming hardware limitations, and creating a seamless environment for sharing media assets, Agile Films aimed to significantly boost operational efficiency, foster creativity, and ultimately enhance the quality and speed of their media production.
Agile Films embarked on a journey to transform their workflow using AWS’s state-of-the-art cloud infrastructure, creating an environment that eliminated the barriers of remote collaboration. The solution was designed to empower their dispersed teams with seamless access to high-performance virtual workstations and shared media files, making it easier for artists to work collaboratively—no matter where they are.
At the core of this solution is NICE DCV, a powerful remote desktop protocol that allows Agile Films’ artists to access Windows-based virtual desktops remotely. These virtual desktops, hosted on AWS EC2 instances with GPU capabilities, provide the power needed to work on high-definition media content and 3D rendering in real time, without any performance lag. This setup ensured that every artist, regardless of location, could participate in the creative process as if they were working in the same room.
The system operates in a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), a secure network environment that spans across two Availability Zones (AZs) to ensure high availability and fault tolerance. Artists connect through a secure Internet Gateway, allowing them to collaborate efficiently while ensuring that all data and interactions are protected. To enhance security further, Active Directory was integrated to centralise user access and permissions management, ensuring that only authorised users could access sensitive resources and media files.
One of the critical elements of the solution was providing access to a shared folder for seamless media collaboration. This was accomplished through Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, a high-performance shared file system that allows artists to store, access, and collaborate on large media files without the need for complex file management. The shared storage ensures that teams are always working with the most up-to-date files, creating a streamlined workflow with real-time updates.
This Windows-based solution has not only enabled Agile Films to continue using their preferred tools but has also harnessed the power of AWS cloud infrastructure to improve the efficiency of remote work. By removing traditional collaboration barriers, Agile Films can now focus on creativity, producing high-quality media content in a secure, scalable, and performance-driven environment.
Agile Films experienced a marked improvement in project turnaround times, with remote collaboration issues significantly reduced. Teams faced fewer obstacles in accessing media files and providing feedback, leading to smoother production cycles.
With AWS’s NICE DCV and FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Agile Films' artists now collaborate in real-time, regardless of their physical location. The shared folder system has become a central hub for all media work, unifying workflows and improving creative output.
The AWS-powered architecture provided Agile Films with the flexibility to scale computing resources as needed, ensuring that during peak production periods, they could seamlessly meet demand without any loss in performance or productivity.
Security has been a cornerstone of the solution. By integrating AWS’s encryption tools and Active Directory, Agile Films ensured that all data is securely stored and accessed. The protection of sensitive media content has remained intact throughout production, maintaining data integrity across the board.
The ability to work on high-definition media content in real-time has led to a significant improvement in the quality of the final output. Agile Films' teams now iterate faster, with more time to refine their work, leading to noticeable boosts in media quality and overall satisfaction.
